Dear Sirs and Madams,

This coming Sunday is the first advent. In four weeks we’ll be celebrating Christmas. Do you know what presents you’ll be giving to your loved ones this Christmas?

In this modern-day affluent society, it can be difficult to find a meaningful gift. Perfume and maybe a negligee for your wife - again? A Super Barbie for your daughter? A mobile phone with MMS for your son?

As I see it, the season of the advent should be a time for reflection - and not a spending spree. In my family, we saw things as getting out of hand and so, years ago, we stopped giving each other presents. We concentrate on the old-fashioned values: Christmas celebrations on Christmas Eve with Great Grandmother, parents, children and - hopefully before long - grandchildren. Christmas mass. The Christmas dinner on Christmas Day with my parents-in-law and the happy gathering of children, partners and friends.

It is a joy to make a gift of inner values. We should get together and support those in our neighbourhoods who are in need. Each of us should finance the education of a child in Africa. By setting a good example, we can show our children where true happiness can be found.

Robert Bienkowski, majority shareholder and chairman of the supervisory board at Koniecpol S.A., knows exactly how to get a grasp on happiness. He’d already made it by his early thirties. He has a lovely family. Daughter Maja is her parents’ pride and joy. Bienkowski is a model business man, highly respected by his colleagues. In 2002 he took over the basket case Koniecpol and very quickly achieved the turnaround. Robert Bienkowski is motor and strategist in one. And a go-getting paragon for his managers and staff. Prof. Dr. Werner Hoffman interviewed him. His motto: “The Polish market offers high potential profits”

The boss as a role model is a theme discussed in today’s article “Practice what you preach…”. Our partner, Hans-Jürgen Kenntner, sums it up in his typical manner with Schwabian values: “A boss who is hard on himself is the best role model for his employees”, says Kenntner, stepping on several managers’ patent-leather covered toes in the process. The Volkswagen scandal would never have happened had the gentlemen actually set an example that lives up to what they preach.

From Volkswagen to automotive supply companies: In our article “Wave of consolidation in the automotive component supplier industry”, Prof. Dr. Werner Hoffmann explains about how suppliers in times of increasing globalisation can use their room for manoeuvre to best effect.

It is my pleasure today to introduce the first in a new series of articles from Thomas Michaelis, “International Financial Reporting Standards on the advance.” As of 2005, the IFRS have come into effect for publicly listed companies, a few exceptions being exempt until 2007. In the coming edition, particularly important IFRS regulations will be explained with examples.

As always, we would like to draw your attention to the section “Fusions and takeovers”. Numerous projects in company sale and acquisition, strategic alliances, co-operations, etc. present interesting alternatives for investors and entrepreneurs. And finally, a supplement about our in-house marriage concerning Dorota “We don't just give marital advice to companies”. Take a look at the newly married couple (photo). You can feel the happiness. After all, it’s the inner values that make us happy.

Have a wonderful time and, mainly, some time for reflection.

Warm regards

Heinz Jäger
